JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President for Development is a member of the Executive Management team at Methodist Children’s Home (MCH) and is tasked with working to link the needs of the organization’s mission with the resources of its benefactors. This staff member develops plans to ensure continued support and identify new support from individuals and organizations with an interest in providing charitable contributions to the MCH through both current and deferred gifts. The Vice President for Development is responsible for creating and implementing an effective and efficient program to meet the fundraising goals of MCH, and charged with leading and inspiring the department to achieve those goals. The Vice President for Development is a designated officer of the corporation as approved by the Board of Directors. The Vice President for Development must maintain a healthy value system, including moral and ethical behavior consistent with the agency’s mission and core values. 

                                            

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Provide vision and goals for fundraising activities, including training and engaging appropriate Board members, MCH staff and volunteers in these efforts.
  • Create and implement strategies to build, expand and maintain a robust pipeline of prospects and donors across the region (Texas and New Mexico) to fund the needs of MCH through philanthropic giving.
  • Serve as MCH’s primary major gift officer for planned gifts, special projects and donations for both operating and capital needs.
    • Manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors, undertake personal engagement activities each year (including solicitation) and meet outlined goals (both annual, planned giving and capital).
    • Coordinate with the consultants on all campaign and related activities to ensure successful completion.
  • Supervise the Directors of Benefactor Relations, Database Operations and Volunteer Services.
    • Perform annual merit reviews, set departmental goals and enforce MCH Policies and Procedures.
    • Oversee procedures and performance of development officers regarding donor contacts, rating of benefactor prospects, major gift solicitations, grant opportunities, progress reports, work performance, confidential filing procedure, and other pertinent information to the Development office.

 

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and as a resource for all matters related to fundraising.
  • Submit annual departmental budget recommendations to the Vice President for Finance; manage budget areas for the Development Department; and authorize all travel arrangements and expenses for department staff.
  • Oversee all operations of the Development Department and implement operational procedures and/or changes to maintain or enhance accuracy, efficiency, etc. of the duties assigned and to ensure fundraising goals are met.
  • Communicate effectively with the President, Vice Presidents, and other Methodist Children’s Home staff regarding the operations and responsibilities of the Development Department.
  • Communicate the mission and policies of MCH as directed by the President and Board of Directors.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Vice President for Development has direct access to the President, and – through him/her – to the Board of Directors. An effort will be made by the President and Vice President for Development to ensure that lines of communication remain open and that the Vice President for Development is considered a full participant in administrative decision-making for MCH.  A cell phone is required, and a stipend is provided to offset the business use of the cell phone.

 

EDUCATION

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is required, and a Master’s Degree is preferred. Educational or experiential emphasis should be in nonprofit management, philanthropy, law, education, business, sociology, psychology or Christian studies. Certifications are preferred, including Certified Fund Raising Executive, Child Care Administrators License, license to the Gospel Ministry, and other certificates that exemplify mastery in the fields under the Vice President’s supervision.

TRAINING
Training hours must be completed to comply with licensing and accreditation standards and MCH policy.  The employee’s supervisor may require additional training to meet specific job requirements or enhance professional growth.  Completion of training requirements is mandatory for continued employment.  

 

 

OTHER

Other duties will at times be required, including participation in a variety of fundraising and public relations activities that advance the MCH mission. This Vice President must manage a fast-paced work environment and be willing to stop working on projects to interact with stakeholders or solve complex issues. 

 

The Vice President for Development must have a proven ability to lead successful fundraising initiatives, communicate with diverse audiences and foster a culture of philanthropy within an organization. This person should have a minimum of five years’ experience in financial development for charitable organizations, management experience, maintaining direct contact with donors and interpreting aspects of charitable giving to donors, and demonstrating a successful record of soliciting funds.

 

The Vice President for Development must have a valid Texas driver’s license and an excellent driving record that meets the standards set forth by the liability insurance company and Methodist Children’s Home, no criminal history and acceptable references.  This position offices at the Waco campus.
