Since 1999, the Petco Foundation has harnessed the power of donations made at more than 1,500 Petco and Unleashed stores across the country to invest more than $200 million in animal welfare organizations. With thousands of animal welfare partners, the Petco Foundation inspires and empowers communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay/neuter services, pet cancer research and treatment, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. Through the Think Adoption First program, the Petco Foundation partners with Petco stores to increase pet adoptions. So far, they’ve helped more than 5.5 million pets find loving families.
The Communication Specialist will be for our San Antonio, TX office and will be reporting to the Manager of Communications & Content, the Communications Specialist will write, edit, and produce a variety of content and communications for the Petco Foundation. The successful candidate will lead content development for internal and external campaigns and projects to support Petco Foundation initiatives including fundraising, adoptions, and charitable partner relations. We are looking for an experienced storyteller who has a passion for animal welfare and understands nonprofit organizations, and can create an emotional connection between our stakeholders and the impact they make as Petco Foundation supporters; thereby inspiring them to take actions that help save animals lives.
  • Help develop the Petco Foundation brand voice and produce brand-right copy for all internal and external communications channels.
  • Ensure that all Petco Foundation communications create a consistent brand experience for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Research, write, edit, and produce various content and communications including articles, web copy, marketing copy, blog posts, press releases, newsletters, social media posts, message points, and more.
  • Coordinate and help plan internal and external communications for projects such as adoption events, videos, charitable partner marketing kits, conferences, and various other marketing collateral.
  • Assist with design for in-store and online communications such as signage and partner communications
  • Assist with writing and scheduling social media posts as needed.
  • Engage with social community and respond to social media requests.
  • Develop content for print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, post cards, annual report, direct mail, intranet, thank you letters, grant communication, website, etc.
  • Partner with internal teams to select, order, and distribute branded collateral and premiums for various conferences and events.
  • Assist in analyzing and reporting content marketing activity and provide feedback on what content resonates with stakeholders.
  • Work with marketing and creative teams to develop new materials for Petco Foundation adoptions program.
  • Create documents and presentations for vendors and corporate partners to demonstrate their return on investment and showcase the impact of their gifts.
  • Work closely with design team on creative and branding initiatives, as needed, to ensure a consistent message across channels and that the text and design work together effectively.
  • Edit and proofread documents written by colleagues and external partners to provide constructive suggestions as needed.
  • Support Petco Foundation special events by working in partnership with Petco colleagues to develop content for invitation, program script, multi-media presentations, etc.
  • Perform other duties assigned.



Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Journalism, Communications or related field and 3 – 5 years of experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment; an equivalent combination of education and related experience may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree.
  • A strong understanding of what makes a powerful narrative and how it is best repeated across audiences and platforms.
  • A strong writer and excellent communicator. Ability to write, edit and post content and copy.
  • Training and experience in how to tell a story using words, images, or audio and an understanding of how to create content that draws an audience.
  • Ability to demonstrate the personal and emotional impact of our work, as well as the data surrounding the measurable outcomes.
  • Skilled at both long-form content creation and real-time (immediate) content creation and distribution strategies and tactics.
  • Comfortable switching between formal content writing and informal, new media content.
  • Experience creating compelling messages for different audiences.
  • Basic graphic design skills and proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, blogging platforms, email marketing software (Constant Contact) and posting to social networks.
  • Basic understanding of WordPress, HTML, CSS, web publishing, SEO and web analytic tools; proficiency with social media marketing applications and social media monitoring platforms.
  • Strong ability to build and develop relationships with internal stakeholders, donors, volunteers, and teammates.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time in order to complete them accurately and on schedule. Willingness to embrace change and to adapt strategy on the fly.
  • Willingness to listen to feedback from others and find the best ways to incorporate that feedback.
  • Self-motivated, good at taking initiative, and comfortable operating under a degree of ambiguity.
  • Ability to create presentation decks using Microsoft PowerPoint or other programs.
  • Passionate about animal welfare and the Petco Foundation mission.
