AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members bring passion and perseverance where the need is greatest: to organizations that help eradicate poverty. VISTA members serve as a catalyst for change, living and working alongside community members to meet our nation’s most pressing challenges and advance local solutions.
To better serve the Center for Vision Health’s low-income and indigent adult and child patients, the VISTA Program Expansion Coordinator will research, create and implement the organization’s program expansion strategy, expanding our visibility into the North Texas community. These actions will lead to overall capacity building for the organization and breaking the cycle of poverty by providing access to essential vision health care to under-served populations. The VISTA will conduct poverty-based research for a community needs assessment focused on vision clinic program expansion into southern Dallas County, along with performing community needs assessments on adult day care and Head Start programs.
This is a great opportunity for recent grads, those looking for an entry level position to gain valuable nonprofit or public health experience when they graduate, or someone who is interested in taking a gap year before continuing with their advanced education. This position might interest those going into the field of public health.
Americorps VISTA positions are not salaried positions, but VISTAs in Dallas County are paid a monthly stipend of about $1109 and are eligible to receive an educational award of $6,195 to use for future education/student loans OR an additional cash stipend of $1,800 after one year of service. Additionally, VISTAs are eligible for healthcare benefits, child care benefits (if applicable), and student loan forbearance during the term of service. VISTAs are also permitted to have part-time outside employment.
