Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) announces that financial planner Kathy Muldoon, CFP®, senior vice president of Carter Financial Management, has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Vester Hughes Award, which was established in 2017 to honor individuals who most embody the spirit of the late, respected tax lawyer, Vester T. Hughes, Jr.
Donors often take a personal approach to charitable giving, but more often than not, they seek assistance from professional advisors to determine how and when to integrate their charitable gift planning. Professional advisors can provide charitable solutions that not only help educate the client, but also meet their charitable giving needs. The Vester Hughes Award is bestowed on professional advisors who have made significant contributions to CFT’s mission of growing philanthropy in the region; for their devotion to assisting clients with charitable giving; their personal commitment to charitable causes; and their thoughtful mentoring of fellow advisors in the field of philanthropy.
“Vester Hughes was the embodiment of integrity, generosity and compassion,” said Dave Scullin, CEO of Communities Foundation of Texas. “Vester was vital to determining how CFT could best serve our region, and CFT is committed to preserving his legacy, while honoring those who exemplify his spirit by being personally committed to the betterment of our community. Service to the community has long been a priority for Kathy Muldoon, and her expertise has lent CFT and numerous other regional institutions invaluable guidance on issues including nonprofit governance, planned giving, investments and fund development.”
Our professional advisor honoree, Muldoon is nationally recognized for her specialization in transition planning due to retirement, death or divorce. Her seasoned financial planning practice reflects deep experience in legacy planning and portfolio strategies for wealth management. Muldoon has generously shared her knowledge with new generations of planners by teaching financial planning certification programs at both the University of Dallas and Southern Methodist University.
“I am honored to receive this prestigious award in honor of Vester Hughes, one of Dallas’ most dedicated and beloved philanthropic leaders,” said award recipient Kathy Muldoon. “I am proud that the work I do makes a difference for those transitioning through major life changes and allows them to continue supporting the worthwhile causes in which they strongly believe.”
CFT created the Vester Hughes Award in honor of Hughes’ legacy, his longstanding commitment to charitable causes, and his support of the organization’s philanthropic initiatives. Hughes first began working with CFT in 1958 and served as its general counsel or senior tax counsel for more than 50 years. During his tenure, CFT grew into one of the most prominent and trusted community foundations in the country. As legal counsel for W.W. Caruth, Jr., Hughes helped create the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas, which continues to grant millions of dollars to the community. Hughes embodied the principle of honoring donor intent, as he guided the CFT through the investing and grantmaking of the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas.
Jack M. Kinnebrew, of Strasburger & Price, LLP, received the first Vester Hughes Award in 2017.
Kathleen A. Muldoon holds a degree from Santa Clara University, and has been with Carter Financial Management as a partner and financial planner since 1979. She has been listed among D Magazine’s “Best Financial Planners in Dallas” each year since the list’s inception in 2004. Muldoon is recognized nationally as an expert financial planner and is frequently quoted in financial press outlets including The Wall Street Journal, FA Magazine, and Consumer Reports.
