Houston Habitat
When we celebrated our 30th anniversary at the “Building a Dream” luncheon last year, who knew we would have so much fun? Of course, there was the traditional meet and greet and networking, but we also taking photo at the “step and repeat” screen, and enjoyed an entertaining talk with Dr. Tererai Trent of Zimbabwe. This year, we celebrate one of our own – fellow Houstonian Jim “Mattress Mack”McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture.
Jim is well known for his creative philanthropy, and direct sales messages (‘Saves you money today!). He is the co-author of the book, “Always Think Big,” citing his uncompromising attitude built one of the biggest retail stores in America. And who can forget his many sports challenges? In 2013, Gallery Furniture ran a promotion for Super Bowl XLVIII promising customers a full refund on any purchase of more than $6,000 if the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl. A similar challenge was given in 2014 with the Houston Astros.
But what stands out in the hearts of Houstononians is McIngvale’s empathetic gestures of giving during Hurricane Harvey. Affected by a few feet of water in his own home, McIngvale nonetheless thought of his fellow Houstonians first. He opened up two of his Gallery Store locations as shelters. In 2018, Gallery Furniture joined KPRC Channel 2 to sponsor their 5th Winter Build of a Houston Habitat Home. Not one to sit still, McIngvale is turning part of the Gallery Furniture N. FWY and Gallery Furniture Grand Parkway stores into community centers, and launching the Gallery Furniture Job Readiness Program in partnership with The WorkFaith Connection, where he plans on providing job training and other courses to help fulfill people’s lives through work, and promoting unity and community.
Houston Habitat is honored to have Jim “Mattress Mack”McIngvale, as the keynote speaker at our 2018 annual “Building a Dream” Luncheon, Tuesday, October 23rd at the Westin Galleria.
