Corporate Cup for the Win – San Antonio Sports Sidelines – June 2018

San Antonio Sports
Corporate Cup for the Win!
More than 5,000 people converged on the University of the Incarnate Word athletic facilities June 2 for the seventh annual San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup presented by Ortho Now Injury Clinic. It was a sight to behold. Thousands having fun tailgating, competing in 13 different events, such as tug-of-war, dodgeball, sack races, Frisbee toss, a 5K and 4×100 relay, cheering on their co-workers, all for a good cause. We thank the 88 companies who participated, some of whom have been with us since the first year.
Of course, we couldn’t do this event without the support of our sponsors and volunteers. We raised approximately $250 000, which will support San Antonio Sports and our kids programs. Companies also donated to six charities to earn points before the competition. We know these donations make a real difference to the San Antonio Food Bank, Haven for Hope, South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, University Health System Blood Donor Services, Boys & Girls Club and San Antonio Sports’ free community programs. Click here to see the impressive donation totals.
Bragging rights for winning their division go to Valero (division 1), Zachry Group (division 2), Spurs, Sports & Entertainment (division 3) and United Allergy (division 4). Click here to see winners of our t-shirt, tailgate and barbecue contests.
Mark your calendars for next year. The San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup will take place on Saturday, June 1 and we’re sure to sell out.

Volunteer Spotlight: Emily Lew
It was after 9 p.m. and the last banners were being taken down and rolled at Heroes Stadium after the Alpha Warrior Team Tough Challenge. Volunteer Emily Lew, who had arrived for her shift at 11 a.m. (after helping set up the day before) was there helping roll them, along with San Antonio Sports staff.
Emily is one of San Antonio Sports’ key volunteers. She has helped at the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, the NCAA® Men’s Final Four®, Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon, and San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, to name a few. But when asked if she had a favorite event, she chose the UIL Basketball Championships where she served as a team host. “As a team host, I got to see what a team does once they got off the bus until it was time to leave,” she recounts. “Plus, what an opportunity to watch a game from court-side!”
Emily has been a volunteer for years. She continues to volunteer because she supports the mission and vision of San Antonio Sports and “I enjoy witnessing teamwork and encouragement of all the competitors.” She likes being “behind the scenes” and also shares her time and energy with Arts San Antonio, the Tobin Center, and the Texas Folklife Festival among others. We’re glad she includes us!

Families Get Fit

If it’s summer, it means the San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is underway! More than 3,000 helped kick it off in May with the District 4 Heroes 5K/10K at Port San Antonio. Free weekly Zumba and Kid Fit classes are being held at eight locations and will continue through August 11. More than $25,000 in cash and prize incentives are being offered, including $1,000 prize drawings every three weeks.
On June 2, we drew our first $1,000 winner, Guadalupe Moreno, who was eligible by earning points through class attendance, getting a health screening and attending Rockin’ at Roosevelt, a morning of free, family-friendly fitness activities. This is the second summer Moreno has participated in the Fit Family Challenge, and she plans on using her winnings to sign up for a healthy cooking class with her kids, purchase a new basketball goal and bikes, and enjoy using the rest with her husband for Father’s Day. She learned of the Fit Family Challenge from a friend who invited her to class and has since lost 50 pounds! She likes that her kids can come as well and points out that there’s no excuse for not coming. “It’s fun, and the kids can come too,” she explains. Moreno encourages everyone to experience the Fit Family Challenge. “Just come. You won’t regret it. If I can do it, you can too. There’s no excuse!”
