Join us as we learn about the most effective tools for maintaining behavioral health and performance in the workplace.
This course is based on the last twenty years’ of psychological research on conflict management. We have incorporated this evidence-based research on effective conflict management behaviors into role-plays that challenge participants to identify and apply effective behaviors so they can manage both types (e.g. approach-approach, avoidance-avoidance, and approach-avoidance) and sources (e.g. task, relationship, and process) of the eight most common conflicts at work (Hart, 2002). These are: conflicting resources, conflicting styles, conflicting perceptions, conflicting goals, conflicting pressures, conflicting roles, different personal values, and unpredictable policies.
The conflict management behaviors taught and reinforced during this course are those that psychological research indicates are most effective for maintaining behavioral health and performance in the workplace and a version of this training has been used to train every astronaut candidate (e.g. scientists, physicians, engineers, pilots, and educators) from NASA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, and the European Space Agency for the last decade.
- Describe both the benefits and detriments of conflict
- Identify behaviors that escalate or de-escalate conflict
- Share strategies for managing and resolving the eight most common kinds of conflict in workplace contexts, including conflict of complex types and sources
- Build experience applying multiple conflict management approaches and will know which approaches they prefer to apply to managing conflicts at work
Who should take this class?
This course is ideal for anyone seeking to practice and develop better conflict management skills to be more effective with conflict in an organizational setting. No pre-requisite skills needed.
This workshop is included in our Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills three hours in the Leadership competency area.
Meet our Presenter:
Dr. Kathryn E. Keeton is the Chief Executive Officer of Minerva Work Solutions and received her Masters and Doctorate in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Houston. She has experience in a variety of industries including oil and gas, healthcare, and aerospace. Before forming Minerva, she worked as a subcontractor to the National Aviation and Space Administration (NASA) as a Senior Scientist to manage the Team-related research with the Behavioral Health and Performance Research Element and then as an Innovation Strategist working for the Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation facilitating the use and implementation of crowdsourcing solutions within the agency.
Minerva provides HR Consulting services to organizations including team and leadership training, executive coaching, selection and assessment, and employee engagement, and Dr. Keeton serves as a Managing Consultant in providing these services to her clients.
Dr. Keeton has multiple authored and co-authored publications and has presented on topics related to innovation, teams, and teamwork at numerous professional conferences. Dr. Keeton is a member of the Society for Industrial Organizational Psychologists (SIOP) and the American Psychological Association (APA), as well as a licensed psychologist in the state of Texas.
