A letter to the community from Lawndale

Lawndale
Dear all,

On behalf of Lawndale, I am thrilled to announce that our next round of exhibitions  will coincide with the launch of our new website and rebrand. For nearly two years, Lawndale has had the pleasure of working with communications and design firm  ttweak on this ambitious project. Alongside our new website, we will be rolling out outreach materials and merchandise that reflect the provocative yet playful space that Lawndale occupies in the Houston community.

Further, I am excited to relate two important changes to our annual exhibition calendar. This year, Lawndale will open our 2018-2019 exhibition season with The Big Show, our beloved juried exhibition by artists working within a 100-mile radius of Lawndale. Usually held in the summer months, our aim is to bring new critical attention and focus to The Big Show by offering enhanced benefits to participating artists, including the opportunity for a studio visit with the juror, Evelyn C. Hankins, Senior Curator of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and a larger monetary prize.

Finally, after 30 years of celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with exhibitions, programs, and a retablo silent auction fundraiser, Lawndale is working with the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) to return this sacred holiday to its cultural roots. This year, Lawndale will partner with MECA to integrate the retablo silent auction into their month-long celebration of Día de los Muertos at MECA’s Dow School campus in the Old Sixth Ward Historic District. The Retablos31 exhibit will open on Friday, October 19th and culminate with the retablo silent auction on Friday, November 2nd. All proceeds will benefit MECA, and we look forward to extending the invitation to participate to artists and patrons in the Lawndale community. It is our hope that all who have supported Lawndale’s Día de los Muertos over the years will be as supportive of MECA and its community in the years to come.

In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you to the galleries in the coming months, before and during your breaks from the summer heat!

Yours sincerely,
Stephanie Mitchell
