Nonproft Services

Nonprofits are businesses that provide much-needed and often essential services to their clients, yet the potential revenue from these services rarely equals operating costs.

We offer guidance and resources for developing strategies to maximize both donated and earned income sources, building successful partnerships between donor and nonprofit.

Fundraising

The fundraising needs of a nonprofit organization are numerous and varied. In addition to raising money for major goals, day-to-day operating costs must be budgeted. As the organization matures, the needs of the organization often change. It is important to understand the purpose and function of different areas of fundraising and how Bacon Lee & Associates can help with each.

Annual Campaigns
Campaigns intended to raise money on an annual basis to support the operating budget, which includes salaries, rent, utilities, equipment purchases and other day-to-day expenses.

Capital Campaigns
Capital Campaigns raise funds for a specific purpose with a stated goal (often buildings, endowment or equipment). They are the funds that enable nonprofits to grow.

Major Gift Campaigns
Similar to Capital Campaigns in that dollars are raised for a specific purpose and a stated goal. The difference is that the solicitations are intense for short periods (6 months to 1 year) and focused on the nonprofit’s closest supporters (rarely new or unknown donors).

Planned Gifts
Also known as deferred giving, these are usually made through provision in a donor's will. Planned Gifts can also be made during the lifetime of the donor, but tied to insurance, property, annuities or in some way linked to the donor's estate plans.

Endowments
Endowment gifts are raised to create a permanent and usually restricted fund to secure a stream of revenue to support/assure the future of the organization.

Planning

As the competition for charitable dollars increases, donors are interested in a nonprofit’s long-term sustainability. A key factor in establishing credibility with donors is the development of a long-term plan for growth. You must have a road map for the future to fulfill your mission.
We can help your nonprofit by providing a comprehensive organizational analysis, including:

  • Structural Review

  • Strategic Planning

  • Business Plans and Budgeting

Donor Services

Responsible and intentional philanthropy is time-consuming and difficult work, but the rewards that come from making a difference in the lives of those who benefit from the giving is where you find value.

We have experience in helping donors turn their passion for good work into reality. Narrowing and focusing charitable intent often means that you can have a bigger effect on the organizations you want to help. We have been a part of foundation teams that create guidelines, develop applications, research grant requests, coordinate site visits and make recommendations on projects that will work. We can also assist you in finding the appropriate charitable vehicle and maintaining compliance with government regulations.

Understanding your philanthropic goals

Selecting an appropriate charitable vehicle and making it work to achieve your charitable goals can be a challenge. We can provide guidance with the following:

  • Assessment of charitable intent and needs

  • IRS applications and process

  • Organizational structure and procedure

  • Guidelines and program initiatives

  • Grant application

  • Public policy, reporting requirements and legal issues

  • Training for trustees

Reviewing nonprofits

A charitable gift is an investment. It is up to you to practice solid due diligence (the process of investigation of the claimed and actual financial and operational performance of a nonprofit) to ascertain that your gift is used appropriately and in the way in which you designate. Our professional services include the following:

  • Application review

  • Site visits and meetings with nonprofit board, staff and clients

  • Assessment of strategic plan, financials and 990s

  • Notebooks for trustee review

  • Trustee meetings facilitation

  • Evaluation reports
