TEXAN LEGACY - FALL 2017 THEME: Teaching Children Generosity
Dr. Jeffrey Steed

August, 2017

2 Corinthians 9:6: But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [NKJV]

Paul gave these words to the Christians in Corinth that could literally change their lives spiritually, if they would grasp them and live them out on a daily basis.  Paul's words focus on the simple, but life-changing concept of generosity.  This vital part of our Christian walk and spiritual growth is at the heart of the Christian life.  When Christ walked this Earth over two thousand years ago, He was generous all the way to the cross.  He was generous to the point of death with His very own life.

Generosity often starts at the “heart” level.  It is beyond a legalistic mindset that often robs us of the joy in giving.  Real generosity is having a desire to benefit the Lord's work and helping others in the name of Christ.  Our willingness to be generous measures the progress of our spiritual growth.  Generosity also can have a direct relationship with the level of joy that we will experience on this side of Heaven.

As we teach values to our children and grandchildren that will forever be rooted in their own hearts and minds, how are we modeling Christ-like generosity?  How are we mentoring a biblical principle that is so crucial to their spiritual growth?

From a practical standpoint, I encourage you to pray and simply ask for God's guidance in how to teach generosity to your children and grandchildren that can have far reaching implications in their lives.  The level of their generosity will likely impact their spiritual growth as well as the level of joy that they will experience during their lifetimes.
