United for Our Soccer Future

It's been a great few weeks for soccer in San Antonio! Earlier this month, we announced San Antonio Sports secured the bid to host the World Collegiate Soccer Championship (WCSC), an international tournament which matches the best collegiate teams from abroad with teams from the United States (see story below). The WCSC also includes a youth tournament and a college club championship, and the championships are expected to provide an annual economic impact of $13 million.

The success of the CONCACAF Gold Cup match, which featured the Mexico national team and attracted more than 44,000 fans to the Alamodome in July, caught the attention of the U.S. Soccer Federation. As a result, San Antonio has been invited to contend to be part of a joint bid that includes the U.S., Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.

These efforts and Spurs Sports and Entertainment's success with San Antonio FC and its goal to bring MLS to San Antonio have presented a united front to the national and international soccer community.

Stay tuned as we continue to pursue bids that will showcase our city while bringing positive economic impact and immense national and international media attention, all helping to grow the sport of soccer in our community.
International Soccer Championship Coming to San Antonio in 2018

The World Collegiate Soccer Championship, an event that matched the best collegiate teams in the United States with the best collegiate teams from abroad for nine straight years, will return to the U.S. soccer calendar in 2018. San Antonio Sports led the successful bid, securing the championship for a five-year term. The championship will feature teams from eight countries as well as provide an estimated annual economic impact of more than $13 million.

Volunteer Spotlight: Juan Gonzalez

We have a saying around San Antonio Sports: it's easier to join our organization than it is to leave. Many of our volunteers have been with us for years, including Juan Gonzalez.  He first heard about San Antonio Sports 10 years ago and has been a faithful and hard-working volunteer ever since. He's a familiar fixture year-round at most of our events, always a few minutes early and ready to help. He enjoys being a part of his community and volunteers with several organizations in San Antonio.

Juan's favorite event is the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon where he can congratulate runners and enjoys hearing their appreciation as they cross the finish line. His most memorable event was meeting former Mayor Henry Cisneros when he was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.

If you'd like to join Juan at one of our upcoming events and help make a difference in our community, visit our volunteer web site at SanAntonioSports.org/volunteer

Thousands Help Wrap Up the 2017 Fit Family Challenge

Twelve weeks after it began, the 2017 Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas ended with a 5K and four $1,000 winners on a sunny morning. San Antonio Sports' Fit Family Challenge is a free summer program, which includes events and resources to help families be more physically active and learn about good nutrition. Weekly Zumba and Kid Fit classes were offered at eight locations in neighborhoods with high rates of diabetes and obesity. Prize incentives are given away throughout the summer to participants who earn points by attending classes, taking health screenings and attending family-friendly Saturday events, which were held every three weeks.

Our final $1,000 winner was drawn at Jump Into Fitness 5K Finale with City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran. A very excited Lisa Fontaine will use her winnings to buy school supplies and exercise equipment she'll share with her daughter and friends. Lisa says that the Fit Family Challenge has changed her life. "I needed to get my numbers under control. I have high blood pressure and it has helped. It is an awesome program and a great group to join." Three other participants won $1,000 gift card grand prizes by earning at least 400 points over the summer to qualify for the drawing.
Fit Family Challenge is a program that makes a difference, offering a fun, non-competitive and friendly atmosphere where everyBODY is welcome. Look for the 2018 program to kick off in mid-May.
Valor Games Southwest

For t
he fourth year, San Antonio Sports and Texas Regional Paralympic Sports will host the Valor Games Southwest, supported by World Car, engaging veterans and service members with a physical disability in four days of Paralympic sport competition. It will take place Sept. 26-29 at three locations.

The Valor Games Southwest, done in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Paralympics, offers cycling, table tennis, power lifting, archery, boccia, air guns and rowing competitions, and celebrates sport as a means of empowering individuals and strengthening community. It also connects athletes with sports opportunities and resources in their communities.  If you'd like to observe the competition or volunteer, visit SanAntonioSports.org/valorgames
