Everybody Wins at Corporate Cup
On June 3, we hosted our sixth annual San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup presented by OrthoNow. What a great day, seeing 86 teams with more than 5,000 employees ranging from CEOs to front line staff competing, tailgating, having fun...all for a good cause. Approximately $175,000 was raised for San Antonio Sports' youth and fitness programs. The event had an even deeper impact on the community through a Charity Challenge, which preceded the event. Teams had an opportunity to earn points through donations to the San Antonio Food Bank, Haven for Hope, Boys & Girls Club, South Texas Blood & Tissue Center and University Health System Blood Donor Services.
Since 2012, 4,020,611 pounds of food, 92,316 items of clothing and $83,118 in rental assistance for Haven for Hope residents, and 26,880 pints of life saving blood have been donated by Corporate Cup teams. Boys & Girls Clubs was our newest nonprofit added this year and teams contributed 4,779 dozen pencils, 6,880 dozen crayons, 1,189 glue stick 3-packs, 1,206 bottles of glue, 912 packs of construction paper, and $11,838 in monetary donations to purchase school supplies. These donations come at a historically slow time for the charities. We are proud that we can help other nonprofits in the community.

Thanks to all the teams who made this the best Corporate Cup yet. Congratulations to our division winners, Valero, NuStar Energy, Airrosti andStantec; as well as our tailgate competition winners, Citi, NuStar Energy, UPS Inside Sales, and Nature Sweet; and our t-shirt contest winners Whataburger, Broadway Bank, Pape-Dawson Engineers and Quintanilla Management.
We hope to see all of our teams return for another great event at the 2018 San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup on Saturday, June 2. Don't miss out on the fun. You can reserve a team slot by contacting Dorsena Picknell at With this year's early sellout, renewing early will be a must!

Volunteer Spotlight: Cliff & Nancy Jenkins
Cliff and Nancy Jenkins volunteer for San Antonio Sports because they believe in our mission and enjoy the people they meet while volunteering. "It's important to get school-aged children involved in sports and physical activities and get them on a path to healthy living," explains Cliff. "It's also vital for adults to stay active and healthy. San Antonio Sports fulfills all of this and more. Plus, we have a ton of fun with all the volunteers and SAS staff!"
The Jenkins learned about San Antonio Sports while supporting the Valero Alamo Bowl's bid for the NCAA football championship game. "They needed people to sit at the
Arneson Theater and cheer when the NCAA Football selection committee motored by on the river. We didn't get the championship and we sweat more than ever before, but we had a blast!" That's when they decided to sign up for more events with San Antonio Sports and "have continued to have fun!"
While they enjoy working all the events together, Nancy's favorite event is the Valor Games. "It is incredibly inspiring to see these wounded warriors succeeding at things that most able-bodied people couldn't do," she says. Cliff leans a little more towards the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon.  He enjoys seeing people from all over the country returning to San Antonio year after year. They also frequently volunteer at the Spurs' Fan Zone, bringing along their daughters to help.
The Jenkins say they look forward to volunteering for San Antonio Sports for years to come. And we look forward to having them as part of our team. If you'd like to join the Jenkins in volunteering, register at and learn about upcoming events.
It's a (Fit) Family Tradition

The eighth annual Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Texas is underway. It kicked off with 3,000 runners at the D4 Heroes 5K with Councilman Rey Saldaña. And now through Aug. 12, free weekly fitness activities and frequent health screenings are scheduled at eight sites to help participants get fit and track their progress. The program is open to all families in Bexar County, however, it targets neighborhoods that have the highest rates of diabetes and obesity. In an effort to eliminate barriers to participation, the weekly events take place at schools and churches in the target neighborhoods. New this year, Antioch Baptist Church joins Baptist Temple Church, Rayburn Elementary, Rogers Elementary, Dwight, Anson Jones and McAuliffe Middle Schools, and A.C.E.S. Early College High School as weekly sites.
The first $1,000 prize winner was drawn June 3. Cynthia de la O has been participating in the Fit Family Challenge for three years and attends classes three times a week. "I've met so many wonderful people," she says. "The instructors are absolutely wonderful, and
of course, at the same time you're getting healthy, energized and getting that workout you really need."  She was thrilled to win for the first time. "I was telling all the girls I've never won anything and maybe this will be my chance." It was. "They called my number and I couldn't even yell out I was so excited!" Cynthia encourages everyone to come to a Fit Family Challenge class. "Join. It's so much fun!"
You can join at any time.Visit to learn about weekly class sites and times.
