A Night to Remember - San Antonio Sports Sidelines - January 2017
San Antonio Sports

January, 2017

Always a Night to Remember!
There are only a few weeks until five remarkable individuals--Dr. Susan Blackwood, Annie Chandler Grevers, Robert Horry, Dr. Sylvester Perez and Leo Rose---will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame and their plaques will hang on the walls of the Alamodome. The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute presented by AT&T is Saturday, Feb. 4 at the H.B Gonzalez Convention Center and is our largest annual fundraiser for our youth programs.

The live, Big Board and silent auctions will be a shopper's paradise, with amazing items up for bid at every price range. You can own a piece of Olympic history with a framed USA Swimming team autographed Olympic flag and a Michael Phelpsautographed photo. Or how about a world class fishing vacation in Costa Rica at Rio Parismina Lodge? A full-length black sheared mink coat from Morris Kaye & Sons? A trip and tickets to The Masters? Or travel in the Spurs RV and the chance to sit in H-E-B's court side box for a game with 11 of your friends!

In addition to great shopping, the American funk band WAR will entertain guests after the induction.

Your support of this event helps us provide life-changing, free sports and fitness programs for San Antonio kids. Don't delay! Click here to buy tickets or sponsor a table.
USA Rugby meets Uruguay on
Feb. 4

San Antonio will host its first international rugby event when USA Rugby meets Uruguay on the pitch at Toyota Field, Saturday, February 4, at 3:00 p.m.

This is one of only two Americas Rugby Championship games that will be played in the United States in 2017. The Championship is a five-week tournament and will feature six of North and South America's top-ranked international rugby union teams: USA, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. Round Rock's Dell Diamond will host the other U.S.-based match on Feb.11.

Rugby continues to be the fastest-growing team sport in the United States with the number of rugby players doubling between 2008 and 2013 to almost 1.2 million, according to data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. In Texas alone, the sport has seen a 17 percent increase in registered USA Rugby members in the last four years.

Tickets beginning at $12 can be purchased through TicketmasterFor more information on the match, visit  https://www.usarugby.org/match/25529-usa-eagles-v-uruguay/.

Clarence Johnson 2016 Volunteer of the Year
Tony Benke (left) & Russ Bookbinder (right) recognize Clarence Johnson.
Clarence Johnson was recognized as the 2016 Volunteer of the Year at the December San Antonio Sports board meeting. Clarence began volunteering with us 25 years ago and since that time, has helped out at most of our events. He also shares his time and energy with organizations including the Alamo Bowl, several charity golf tournaments, Elf Louise and the Tobin Center, to name a few.

"Clarence is always ready to help or lead the charge," says Tony Benke, director of volunteers. "He has turned into a "specialist" organizing parking for events...always a critical need. His constructive insights and history with past events has made him an excellent resource and sounding board for planning future opportunities."

Clarence and his wife will attend the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute as our guests as a small token of our appreciation.
