San Antonio Sports

February, 2016

Stars at Night Will Shine Bright
San Antonio Sports' offices are located at the Alamodome which is across the highway from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. For the past two years, I have been watching the new expansion go from a hole in the ground to a finished building. Last week, the City of San Antonio held a grand opening of the new space and it is spectacular.

This new space, which includes the 54,000 square foot Stars at Night Ballroom, will be the site of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute on Feb. 27. Our silent and big board auctions will be in the same room as the stage and dinner tables, making everything more convenient for our guests. And this year's Tribute promises to be one of the best yet. From spectacular auction items to a top-rate class featuring Shaquille O'Neal and his Cole High School teammates, Olympic track gold medalist Darold Williamson and San Antonio Sports founder and nationally recognized swimming coach George Block, not to mention the renowned Beatles tribute band, The Fab Four, you won't want to miss it. Buy your table today! Click on this link to get a sneak preview of the live, big board and silent auction items secured to date. We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Go!Kids Gets Going

The 13th annual University Health System Go!Kids Challenge™ powered by San Antonio Sports had a rousing start at Sky Harbour Elementary with special guests Councilman Rey Saldaňa, Olympic track hopeful and 12-time All-American at UT Kendra Chambers, KABB Fox 29 anchor and reporter, Erin Nichols, Southwest ISD Superintendent Lloyd Verstuyft, the Southwest High School drum line and dragon mascot, Go!Kids mascots Jumping Jack and Active Annie...and of course, the smiling children of Sky Harbour. Guests were treated to a fitness dance performance by students to "Uptown Funk." Sky Harbour joins more than 220 other schools around the area in this program that challenges students to be physically active, eat their fruits and veggies, and make water their primary drink of choice.

Participants track their activity and healthy eating on a special log. If they do five fitness activities every week for six weeks, they will earn two complimentary ticket to SeaWorld San Antonio for Go!kids Challenge Day on April 10. "We want to motivate children to be active every day and embrace an active lifestyle," said San Antonio Sports President & CEO Russ Bookbinder. "The Go!Kids Challenge helps children understand that fitness can be fun, and if it's fun, it can become a daily habit." To learn more about the program, click here
San Antonio Sports Is Going Over the Edge

Over the Edge is an exciting urban adventure fundraiser that challenges you to take your support for San Antonio Sports to new heights. We will rappel down 15 stories at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel! Participants need not have any specialized experience or training, just a passio
n for transforming our community through the power of sport.

Donors who raise $1,000 will be assigned a personal time slot to rappel. Each "Edger" will rappel from the 19th floor to the 4th floor of the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel. Edgers do not need to have any special skills or training prior to their rappelling experience. Highly trained industrial rope specialists (SPRAT or IRATA certified) will walk each Edger through the technical aspect and prepare them for their unique experience!

San Antonio Sports is also making participation in Over the Edge an official way for participants in our annual  San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup presented by Humana to earn charity challenge points for their company teams. For more details, click here to visit the Corporate Cup site.

Digging Volleyball

On a recent Saturday morning, 12 courts were filled as almost 900 i play! afterschool participants played in San Antonio Sports i play! afterschool Valero Energy Foundation volleyball tournament.

This special competition was the culmination of a five week unit where students learned skills such as setting, serving, bump passes and the rules of the game. After a morning of play, Beacon Hill Elementary came in first and won the Valero Cup. Congratulations to Briscoe Elementary for their second place finish.

Students are now learning golf, with the Greehey Family Foundation Golf Tournament scheduled for March 5.
Volunteer Profile: Jim Parido

2008 was the first year San Antonio hosted the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon and the first time Jim Paridovolunteered at one of our events. Since then, he has been a regular and can be found at almost all of our events, including the H-E-B Fan Zone at Spurs games, the USA Swimming Nationals and Jr. Nationals this summer, Valor Games Southwest, and most recently at four shifts at the NCAA Convention. When asked if he had a favorite, he found it difficult to choose but selected the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon. "The size of the field, the enthusiasm of the runners and the dynamics of the event make it a joy to serve and I look forward to it each year." Jim says that "at the core, the important intent is to help someone.  Also, I have discovered helping others helps me."

Jim also volunteers at his church and for the Alamo Bowl, U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and has helped at the NCAA Men's and Women's Final Fours, AT&T Golf Championship, Valero Texas Open golf tournament and the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

When asked why he volunteers for San Antonio Sports, he replies, "I gain and feel a great sense of accomplishment in helping others in many different ways and pride in representing San Antonio Sports and other varied organizations. Ultimately I remember what a former mayor of San Antonio expressed to us at a volunteer orientation before an NCAA Final Four: 'There are going to be thousands of visitors coming who have never been to San Antonio before. They will see your smile and I want you to know YOU put a face on San Antonio!'"

If you'd like to join Jim as a volunteer for San Antonio Sports, we are looking for help with
scorekeeping and monitoring games at San Antonio Sports i play! afterschool Greehey Family Foundation golf tournament on Saturday, March 5. The golf tournament will be held at Sam Houston High School. If you can devote your Saturday morning on March 5 to helping, please  click here or call Tony Benke at 210-820-2126.
