Sidelines - December 2015 - 2015 Year in Review
San Antonio Sports

December, 2015

Whether you're a donor, sponsor, volunteer or participant, thank you for your support of San Antonio Sports!

We have put together a "Year in Review" that highlights the programs and accomplishments of our organization. San Antonio Sports' success is based upon broad community involvement that includes our board of directors and committee members, donors, corporations, grantors, event participants, volunteers, facilities, local government, partnering non-profit agencies and school districts.  You can access it here.

We hope you will take a minute to read about the results of our collective efforts to make a difference in our community. Without you, we could not fulfill our mission to transform our community through the power of sport. We are grateful!

On behalf of all of us who work daily to help our kids, families and economy - thanks so much and happy holidays!
Engrave Your Name in the Hall of Fame

Renovations will begin soon at the Alamodome, which gives us the opportunity to create the Hall of Fame Plaza at the north entrance. This is your chance to be a part of San Antonio history and engrave your name alongside those of San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame members at the entrance of the Alamodome. Purchase a premium brick option, and you can choose the pod of your favorite Hall of Fame member. Hall of Fame classes will be engraved in granite surrounded by an area for members' friends, family and fans. Gift certificates are available for that unique holiday present!

Proceeds from the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Plaza brick campaign will benefit our nonprofit San Antonio Sports' youth initiatives, including the innovative i play! afterschool program.  The funds generated from brick purchases are 100% tax-deductible. To learn more, visit SanAntonioSports.org or call 844-HOF-BRIX.

Game Day a Month Away

We're a month away from a great day of high school football! Purchase your tickets for the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B and watch the area's best seniors in this competition of East vs. West. Last year marked San Antonio Sports' second consecutive year to partner with the U.S. Army All-American Bowl to create a day-long celebration featuring the best high school players in the country and the top San Antonio area athletes. The game was played in front of 11,200 fans in the Alamodome and featured 100 players from 52 area high schools. Forty of those players went on to play football in college, with many receiving scholarships. The 2016 San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B is Saturday, January 9, at 5:00 pm and will once again be played in the Alamodome after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. It will feature 104 players from 56 schools. Don't miss it! Tickets include both games and are on sale at the Alamodome box office or through Ticketmaster

Kids go the Distance at Fun Run

A cold sunny morning greeted 2,000 kids who were ready to rock a mile at the SUBWAY® KiDS ROCK, powered by San Antonio Sports which was held at SeaWorld. More than 900 kids from our i play! afterschool program were completing their track unit at KiDS ROCK and like all the participants, received free admission into SeaWorld later that day.

San Antonio Sports distributed training logs to 170,000 students in 300 area schools in October. Children completed a cumulative marathon over eight weeks, many running their last mile at SUBWAY® KiDS ROCK which was part of the Humana Rock 'n' Roll Marathon weekend. There was a sense of accomplishment and many smiles on the faces of these young racers. To see photos from the morning, click here.

25,000 Rock San Antonio
Clear skies and calm winds greeted Humana Rock 'n'
Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon runners, volunteers and fans as 25,000 took to the streets to run a marathon, half-marathon, relay or 5K distance. San Antonio native Mark Greenewon the men's marathon
with a PR of 2:31:32. Aaron Braun from Alamosa, CO won the men's half. Olympian Kara Goucher won the women's half and Stephanie Wurtz of Manitou Springs, CO won the women's full.

In addition to Goucher, U.S. Olympians Shalane Flanagan and Amy Cragg ran the half in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Trials for the marathon on Feb. 13. Meb Keflezighi returned to San Antonio and served as grand marshal on Sunday and paced the 10K run on Saturday.

Runners came from all 50 states and 27 countries. San Antonio Sports and the City of San Antonio also announced that they have entered into a new partnership with the Competitor Group, Inc. to produce the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon & ½ Marathon in San Antonio for the next five years. Next year's race is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016.

Enjoying the Fun Without the Run

A big shout out to the 3,000 volunteers who helped make the Humana Rock 'n' Roll Marathon weekend a success. From the health and fitness expo on Friday to the finish line on Sunday and the five races in-between, volunteers helped with many aspects of the event. Our volunteers once again demonstrated why we have one of the best crews in the country. On behalf of San Antonio Sports and the Competitor Group, thank you for your time and commitment.

Bexar County Games

The 2015 Bexar County Games presented by Ancira closed with two tournaments. The Bexar County Games presented by Ancira Copa Rayados Internacional welcomed 280 teams and is the largest international soccer tournament in Texas. Unfortunately, heavy rains forced cancellation after two days of play, but we look forward to hosting this international tournament again in 2016.

The 2015 Bexar County Games presented by Ancira Valero Energy Foundation Super Series Winter Nationals welcomed 54 teams to the Alamo City. In its first year, the tournament drew teams from across the State of Texas. It was held at one of Bexar County's finest baseball facilities, McAllister Park Little League baseball complex.
