Happy Summer!

We hope you have the opportunity to enjoy some fun in the sun this summer. The staff of San Antonio Sports is squeezing vacation time into our jam-packed summer schedule, too. Please know you can always reach us at 210-820-2100.

Swimming Championships on Deck

If you're a fan of swimming or just a sports fan, join us for two outstanding weeks of competition at one of the nation's premier swim venues.  San Antonio will be the site of the Speedo Junior National Championships, July 30-Aug. 3 and the Phillips 66 National Championships Aug. 6-10. Both will be held at Northside Swim Center, a state-of-the-art facility that has shaded spectator seating elevated above the deck.  Tickets maybe purchased online at sanantoniosports.org/swim.  Don't miss any of the action or your chance to see up and coming future Olympians and current swim stars who may be swimming in Rio in 2016!

Getting Healthy Together

More than 650 people had a great time at the family-friendly Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas Get Healthy at Hardberger. Co-sponsored by District 8 City Councilman Ron Nirenberg, adults and children had fun doing Zumba®, rock climbing, trying out Highland Games, playing tug-of-war, going on a fitness walk and doing yoga and boot camp. There was something for everyone.  Another winner of $1,000 was drawn, with Eva Rosales holding the lucky ticket (see story below).

The 12-week summer program is at the half-way point, but families can join at any time and be eligible to win $1,000 at two more remaining Big Events, July 25 and Aug.15. To learn more, visit FitFamilyChallenge.com.

Make a Splash

Gold medal Olympians Cullen Jones and Rowdy Gaines were in San Antonio last week to share a message of saving lives through swimming lessons. Their visit was part of the USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash tour. Jones gave two in-water lessons to some lucky kids, and teamed up with Gaines for a fundraising luncheon and evening town hall meeting.

Make A Splash and the San Antonio Sports VIVA SWIM For Life, presented by University Health System share a goal of reducing childhood drownings. Formalized swim lessons reducing the risk of child drowning by 88 percent.  Approximately 3,500 people die of drowning annually. Seventy-percent of African American children and 60 percent of Hispanic children in the U.S. do not know how to swim. Additionally, African-American children are three times more likely to drown than Caucasian children. Thanks to generous sponsors, all San Antonio Parks and Recreation outdoor pools are offering free swimming lessons this summer. Click hereto learn where. Dancing Her Way to Fitness

Eva Rosales doesn't like the "E" word:  exercise. But Zumba® isn't exercise, "It's like dancing!" she says. When Eva heard her number called at the Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas Get Healthy at Hardberger, she danced her way up to the front to receive her $1,000 check. Unable to conceal her excitement, she shared her enthusiasm with everyone around her.

A teacher in Harlandale ISD, Eva started exercising in February at Zumba® classes offered at her school. This summer she joined the Fit Family Challenge for the first time. "I've met a lot of new friends and love all the rewards. I used to be a couch potato, but now I have so much more energy and I need to stay healthy to keep up with my kids." Eva has a workout buddy she meets twice a week at Fit Family Challenge classes, and they encourage each other to go. She plans to use her winnings to treat her family, nieces and nephews to a staycation day at Schlitterbahn Water Park.
