Children At Risk

May, 2015

We hope you had a happy Mother's Day and know that  there is no greater influence in the life of a child than that of a parent. Despite the many benefits of parent education, less than 2% of parents in Houston and Dallas access evidence-based parent education programs each year. CHILDREN AT RISK (C@R) is excited to announce that, with the support of The Rees-Jones Foundation, we will be expanding our current ability to train evidence-based parent education providers in Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) into North Texas.

This summer is an exciting time for our Parenting staff and partners. The 84th Legislative Session is well under way, and C@R has been tirelessly advocating for legislation that improves the quality of life for children in Texas. Key policy initiatives include strengthening evidence-based parenting programs and increasing access to behavioral health coverage for parents. Our Center for Parenting and Family Well-Being welcomes Frances Nguyen, MPH to the Houston Office, and we are excited to introduce to our team their efforts to ensure all children in our state grow up in a safe, stable, and nurturing home.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bob Sanborn

CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN
This summer, CHILDREN AT RISK invites you to attend our CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN lunch series as a chance for community advocates to connect with community leaders. Our next lunch on June 9 features Houston Mayoral Candidate, Chris Bell. Please join us at C@R's Houston office for a one hour lunch and informal discussion led by Dr. Bob Sanborn, President and CEO of C@R about Mr. Bell's background, his current work, and his vision of the future for Houston's children.

A FANTASTIC DAY OF GOLF & PHILANTHROPY
Special thanks to Mark Troth, Sebastian Solar and Tom O'Connor for Co-Chairing our 15th Annual C@R Golf Tournament at the Woodlands Country Club's Tournament Course! This year, teams returned to one of Texas' most prestigious courses, enjoyed delicious food, wonderful company and an incredible round of golf while supporting C@R and Texas’ children. Our Tournament Host, Melissa Wilson, coordinated amazing surprises at almost every hole with an activity or a gift at each tee box! Cocktails, dinner and a live auction put a perfect end to this fantastic (but slightly wet) day. With the support of all who donated and attended, we are so grateful to have raised over $80,000 to make Texas a better place for children!
