San Antonio Sports Sidelines - February 2014
San Antonio Sports

February, 2015

On Feb. 28, the Class of 2015 -- Doug MoeGary DeLauneAl LaMacchiaPat Frost and Lori Norwood -- will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame at our annual black-tie gala. The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute is one of the most significant fundraisers for our youth programs. Funds raised through the live and silent auctions, table sales and raffle tickets support i play! afterschool, the University Health System Go!Kids ChallengeTM, SUBWAY KiDS Rock marathon training program and more. We know these programs are making a difference in the lives of the children we serve. At last year's Tribute, we heard from Gloria Martinez, our i play! coach at J.T. Brackenridge Elementary. She shared that many of her school's children have challenges they face every day. But being in i play! helps build their confidence, strength, and discipline to face these difficulties knowing that they can be successful in life.

Please join us for a special evening. We'll hear from another i play! family, and you won't want to miss the live performance from Grand Funk Railroad. You may purchase a table or tickets online at SanAntonioSports.org/halloffame or by call 210-820-2109.

Coca-Cola Foundation Grant Supports Afterschool Program Expansion
i play! afterschool, San Antonio Sports' free, innovative afterschool program, began in 2008 serving 112 kids at five campuses in Harlandale and San Antonio Independent School Districts. Today, it has grown to serving 1,100 children at 45 elementary schools thanks to a three-year grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation.

i play! afterschool ignites a love of sport in third through fifth graders while teaching them life lessons about active living, good nutrition and strong personal character. More than 1,100 kids at 45 schools in two inner-city school districts -- Harlandale and San Antonio ISDs -- have an opportunity to succeed through sports. They receive skill-based instruction in track, soccer, volleyball, tennis and golf, as well as nutrition and character education, plus leadership and team-building skills. Each sport unit culminates in a fun tournament where kids can demonstrate their new skills and parents, family and friends can cheer them on.

Grants
The Sundt Foundation awarded a $3,758 grant to support program costs for San Antonio Sports' i play! afterschool program. The program provides a safe, healthy afterschool environment for 1,100 youth in the Harlandale and San Antonio ISDs, focusing on those most at-risk of academic failure and poor health to excel to their greatest potential through sport training and character and nutrition education.

The Mirza Trust of San Antonio awarded a $7,500 grant in support of San Antonio Sports youth programs, including i play! afterschool, University Health System Go!Kids ChallengeTM, and Subway KiDS Rock. Funds will be used towards program costs with the goal to transform the health and fitness of our youth through the power of sport.
