Join the adventure . . .

We asked ESL teachers and directors to share their stories. They talked about students from far and wide--Vietnam, Ecuador, Mexico, Honduras, Spain, China . . .

Many of the speedy English language learners, it seems, are driven by the need to find work. Imagine moving to a foreign country, and within eight months passing a technical exam in that country's language. Or, teaching other newcomers to speak the language because you are already that proficient.

"I have to get a job," said one dedicated student, "because my kids only eat at school." That's motivation.

  Engaging Teacher

While these ESL teachers and directors talk passionately about their students, it becomes increasingly clear that they themselves are a part of the story. Hungry children? Not on my watch.

They meet their students where they are and do whatever it takes to help them move forward--like prepping them for job interviews and shuttling them to appointments. Or, coaching them in reading so they can get promotions.

One teacher has his students write down anything they encounter during the week that they don't understand. They go over it in class and everyone benefits.

Another teacher brought in an immigration expert when she discovered her students were living in fear. Some had been waiting 13 years for citizenship and had concluded that by now they must certainly be illegal. That night their minds were put to rest.

Yet another teacher describes hosting holiday parties in her home, so students can experience American customs and traditions. At a Christmas party, a Muslim man was intrigued with the nativity set in the corner of the room. She explained its meaning, and that night he became a Christian.

Ask an ESL teacher to share a story. If it sounds like an adventure you'd like to be a part of, Literacy Connexus is here to help!
