Texas CASA to Host Annual Conference in San Marcos
Texas CASA

October, 2013

Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is hosting the 2013 Conference: Fierce Advocacy-the CASA way, in San Marcos, Oct. 24-26. Nearly 600 CASA volunteers, staff and board members from across the state have registered for an inspiring, invigorating and informative three-day event with the CASA community.

This year’s conference features a robust lineup of keynotes speakers, specialized institutes and over 30 workshops in advocacy, program administration, and governance tracks. Attendees will gain valuable insight into new tools and resources to enrich and enhance the quality of advocacy provided to children in the foster care system.

Featured speakers Tonier Cain, whose life of abuse, addiction and incarceration were documented in “Healing Neen.” Kevin Campbell, a nationally recognized expert on finding families for children in care, is also presenting. Austin businesswoman Gigi Bryant will share her story of triumph after growing up in foster care.

The conference is open to individuals who work with children in the child protection system, including Child Protective Services staff, attorneys, therapists and others. To register, visit www.TexasCASAConference.org.

About Texas CASA

Texas CASA is comprised of 71 local programs serving over 23,600 children, with more than 7,600 trained volunteers in 207 Texas counties. Unfortunately, more than half the children in care do not have advocates to speak up for them in court or the child welfare system.

CASA volunteers are specifically trained to advocate for children in foster care. Volunteer advocates get to know the child and speak to everyone involved in the child’s life, including their family members, teachers, doctors, lawyers, social workers and others.

The information they gather and their recommendations help the courts overseeing the cases make informed decisions. CASA volunteers commit to a child until the case is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home.
