"Once Upon a Time: Fairy Tales in Poetry"

March 4-25 -- Led by Christopher Soden

"Once Upon a Time: Fairy Tales in Poetry"
Jung often relied on Fairy Tales, fables, and legends to illustrate his notion of
the "Collective Unconcious," as they often follow certain patterns of narrative
thought that appear in every culture. Princesses being courted by beasts, wicked
stepmothers, lost children, pure hearts battling against dark forces, ambitious
knaves climbing and flying into the sky--these are just a few of the characters
that populate our childhood stories and teach us about our own fears, needs, desires,
and whims. Familiar to the point of cliche, trying to glean fresh insights can prove
a challenge. Join us as we scratch beneath the surface to discover how the overwrought,
the overused, and the overquoted world of Fairy Tales can produce original insights
and powerful poetry precisely because it engages our expectations.
CHRISTOPHER SODEN is a native Texan who received his MFA in Writing (Poetry) from
Vermont College and has taught classes and guest lectured on the subjects of craft,
theory, genre, literature and publication. He is a writer, teacher, critic, lecturer
and performer who is the author of the highly praised poetry collection, Closer.

THE WRITER'S GARRET once again is partnering with those creative geniuses at OIL
AND COTTON to bring several new and different installments of our popular ZINE
CAMP! Space is limited for this year's "Best Kid's CAMP" [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001PH4rAootiYwux3AN5tLibhzchlJIN41FNyg3XL4Nr1__FQW3inuYxgoy8ARx1ra4ZPNDp9zdrfCvN-ROfYjDxJi63u-enH4pCUpVm-KNUlQve5pGocSn2L3_QtifISeZUDk8ZH9iSwTQ7w2mFDjXUiW0jq9Tr0rYEzihUeprbTupfqLZMKDMnddLfD6XukIC]
winner, awarded by The Dallas
Observer!
Oil and Cotton and The Writer's Garret have developed an in-depth exploration of
creative writing and art through

zine making (a wonderfully creative art form based on the words "Fanzine" and "Magazine"--learn
more by clicking here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001PH4rAootiYxzorr7NGkOmesRky0FoU4ibWfUvwJsvjTFAfw7IZxl00ODl_MbRa4nNLhgII6PmXtLyFW3Iptr7Bt4ETEEjEls1MvwiZfJ8zhefd69W-srLW4JK4ItlBSy]).

These hands-on camps teach young people how to make their very own zines, small
handmade books that explore personal and imaginative connections through nature,
art, and notions of SELF. Each ZINE Camp cultivates a dynamic artistic and ecological
awareness through "found art" while introducing students to individualized tools
for self-expression (writing, graphics, drawing, collage, and printmaking). Even
if your young artist has already been, each camp inspires a brand new experience!

Early registration is highly recommended, as these camps tend to fill up quickly.
(The last one had a waiting list!)

YESTERDAY IS SOMEONE ELSE'S TODAY:
Bringing Characters from the Past to Life

with

Kathleen Kent

Saturday, March 23, 10 AM-1 PM

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

This  3-hour class is for all levels of  writers from beginners to advanced  who
want to explore how to breathe life and experience into their  characters; instill
a sense of immediacy and sensory realism into their setting, whether it happened
yesterday, last year, or two thousand  years ago; and build and internal relationship
between the narrator, characters, and reader.  It is sometimes easy to forget that
readers  need to be convinced, and when we bring stale memories or ideas crusted
over by historical facts, we sometimes lose the feeling that human  experience
is eternal.

Participants  will either have an idea for a novel-length work, but feel daunted
by  the challenge, or  already have begun the process, but are unsure of how  to
structure their current narrative to the long form.  This course  works well as
a companion piece to Peggy Chittenden Brown [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001PH4rAootiYzWZQuYQd8_Wf3C4Op98XZ1vJFqSwSUDHn_Y4x134iqE3Yp-njEdemjOM5Q2Bk2lcipE6m7m90xN2WYslCi-fkFsGKA9K2uD9JGK3Rn3JOHCeDEYTL0x-snClUoC8BKAko=]'s
"The Long and the Short of It." If you are drawn to Personal Narrative  or Historical
Fiction, you may want to look at the Members' Bundle below  to also take courses
with Patricia Falve [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001PH4rAootiYy2FjeMJyq8m8QohUY3tf29qxUfyzHSCPAKZh_-WJP9kFsfNoXb0BntY0e0Fd_oZ02cKhAMoompBRYxPcvg0E8aITZYx4rohhM4WKamZN1P58thWK0wnNRs]y

(and save money to boot)!

KATHLEEN KENT, who wrote her first book "on the runway to fifty," will discuss her
own strategies for completing and publishing her bestselling novel, The Heretic's
Daughter. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their own work for review
and discussion.  (Author's note: there will be no editorial "critique" of shared
work, only gentle observations.)

The LONG and the SHORT of It:

A Short Story Approach to Writing (and Finishing) That Novel

with

Peggy Chittenden Brown

Thursdays, March 28-April 11, 7-9 PM

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

This 3-evening course is for all levels of  writers  who might want to write short
stories or might want to write novels and who may have experience in either, neither,
or  both. Most creative writing programs emphasize short stories, and while  they
are a better fit for our fast-paced lives and short attention   spans, THE REALITY
IS that publishers are still eyeing that next big  novel--today's Moby Dick or Harry
Potter! If you've  been wanting to "make the leap" from short stories to novels,
or are not  really sure how each of these writing approaches varies, this course
will help you better understand the parameters, and let you in on that  dirty little
secret that "Size really DOES matter."

Before  classes begin, please watch Elizabeth Gilbert's TED Talk on "Your  Elusive
Creative Genius." Participants should also come with WHAT IF,  available from Barnes
and Noble for $2.64 used (or rent it $11.42 for 60  days). You can also get it from
Amazon for $48.00. 60 days).

PEGGY CHITTENDEN BROWN has her Pd.D. in Humanities and was named Piper Professor
by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001PH4rAootiYwdr_80b1QZNSUIfuEP3dOpputHdjTBcf0xfapL8e8e46NnZ0Tqq1Xa-X13aknw-JRe9Fmmdd03ys07T1-QeZpqxUqCbwh8gZAIZNYXJbcGUAVbB2unQ6LolXn3FPzZvE96AubrLY7Nt1EIZlgyRWrTFWs87ZELjwaYzNxOgV8ydA==]
of the State of Texas after being named Outstanding Professor at Collin College
in Plano [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001PH4rAootiYy3Tn7CQOaGEmAAo1DuKzNekBCqjVdmXeyna_VB4DJvyCKBRx8MTQNyJOlaQbFADlp4dVVcGIBcLUPdaT3j_7a_kwdrOsBKXfhMkiwyAmv7OA==].
She teaches creative writing, English composition, and humanities.  Her  publishing
history has included short stories, poetry, and academic  articles, but . Her first
novel, Strangler Figs, won the  Readers' Favorite Award from the Association of
Independent Authors.

Her  second novel is in progress with the working title of "Instincts.

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

This 2.5-hour class is for all levels of  writers, from beginners to advanced ,
who read and/or appreciate the craft of Historical Fiction.

the elements of fiction, and work on putting the story first, while striving for
a compelling sense of history. Perfect "companion" piece for upcoming workshops

love story and a heartfelt love letter to Northern Ireland." - Publisher's Weekly

About THE YELLOW HOUSE: "This novel delivers the best of both worlds: secrets, intrigue
and surprising twists will keep readers flipping the pages, while Falvey's insight
and poetic writing tugs at the heartstrings of the most cynical audiences."
