 Message from the President

Dear Friends,

Every year in November, I’m so grateful, not just for my family and friends, but also for the opportunity to work for an organization that improves and saves countless lives on a daily basis.

In this issue, we want to thank our featured clients, donors, and staff who come together to support our community—whether it’s lending a hand during a hurricane, sending a note of encouragement, or welcoming new life into our Phoenix House family.

Every day, we at Phoenix House have plenty to be thankful for—we have friends like you.

Warm regards,

Howard P. Meitiner
President and CEO

Join Us for Giving Tuesday
As the holiday season approaches, we're counting our blessings and thinking about giving back to our communities. With this in mind, Phoenix House is proud to partner with more than 750 organizations nationwide for Giving Tuesday, a campaign that aims to create a new holiday dedicated to acts of kindness. As part of this initiative, between now and November 27, we’re asking our friends and supporters to write letters of encouragement to the men, women, and teens in our treatment programs. Please join us as we let our clients know that we support them on their recovery journeys. Click to find out how you can send a letter.

Weathering the Storm

We are grateful to report that our New York, New England and Mid-Atlantic programs safely weathered Hurricane Sandy. Although the Phoenix House Academy of Westchester lost power for several days, we managed thanks to our excellent staff and helpful neighbors from the community. Clients from the Phoenix House Hauppauge Center Men’s Program spent time with their brothers in recovery from the Brentwood Men’s Program before power was fully restored the next morning. Phoenix House Academy of Long Island lost power for only a few minutes, while the Phoenix House Lake Ronkonkoma Campus had no power losses. Although Phoenix Houses of New England experienced power disruptions, their generators took over and the facilities emerged from the storm unscathed. At Demeter House in Virginia, staff braved power outages and inclement weather to carry on with counseling sessions and even welcome the birth of a new baby.

Newborn at Demeter House
With great love and excitement, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic recently welcomed a new baby at our Demeter House program. The client who gave birth to her child while in treatment couldn’t be more thrilled about this joyful event; she’s happy to bring her baby into the supportive and nurturing community of Demeter House. Both mother and child will benefit from the program’s educational lectures, therapy groups, life skills trainings, recreational activities, and other services that help mothers in recovery create healthy lives for themselves and their children. True Story Spotlight: April

"Addiction affected my life before I even had a choice. From age 12, I dropped acid, drank alcohol, and smoked a lot of pot. After I became a mother at age 19, I coped by snorting cocaine and got with a guy who was a full-blown addict.
I was sick and tired of the pain. In my seventh year of addiction, I was arrested and introduced to Phoenix House Citra Center. I got so much out of Phoenix House. For me, recovery means letting go and taking responsibility. It’s a lifelong process that Phoenix House allowed me to begin."
