March 2012

Birds and Bottomland Blitz - Bird Migration

The next Birds and Bottomland Blitz program will feature bird migration. Two well qualified folks will lead the activities on Saturday, March 10, from 9:00 to 11:00am. Cecilia Riley is the Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory and Tom Morris is a Master Naturalist and lifelong birder who has led trips internationally. The monthly program is a joint effort by the Cradle of Texas Master Naturalists and GCBO to raise awareness of the importance of the Columbia Bottomlands to birds and other native flora and fauna.

Next month's topic is Wildflowers and Prairie Habitat with Thomas Adams.

GCBO Receives ConocoPhillips Grant

Earlier this month we were honored to receive a grant in the amount of

$60,000 from ConocoPhillips in support of our 2012 conservation objectives. Pictured here for the donation ceremony is GCBO Executive Director, Cecilia Riley and Mr. Gary Freiburger, General Manager of the ConocoPhillips Sweeny Refinery. One of ConocoPhillips' particular environmental interests is conserving the natural habitat of migratory birds, an objective that has been among the company's charitable priorities since the 1970s. Through grants, their corporate engagement strives to protect, restore and improve the natural systems and habitats upon which migratory birds depend for survival, and to benefit declining bird species. On behalf of our coastal partners, our board of directors, and staff, we wish to publically thank ConocoPhillips, their Corporate Headquarters and Sweeny Refinery staff for their enduring commitment to preserving the wildlife and wild lands of the critical Gulf Coast region. Over the coming year this generous grant will help GCBO accomplish many vital land protection efforts around the Gulf of Mexico, and specifically to protect migratory birds and their required habitat.

Quintana Workday

ExxonMobil retirees - Jan Cobb, Gary Hanson, David Hanson, Gary Cobb, & Jan Hanson

On Friday, February 24th, 20 volunteers led by board member Tom Taroni worked hard to spruce up the Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary for spring. We built up the trail through the cane, cleared brush, replaced the front fence, replaced flowering plants in the front flowerbeds and planted 60 Wax Myrtles and Elm Trees. The good folks from the town of Quintana built us an equipment box by the tower so we can store hoses and other useful things on site to make watering much easier this year! Five of our volunteers were ExxonMobil retirees who worked tirelessly building up the trail through the cane so you can walk through without rubber boots. Their volunteer hours will go towards a matching grant from ExxonMobil to support the Smith Point Hawk Watch. Thanks so much to everyone for their support!

David Sibley to Visit Houston

On Wednesday, April 11 David Sibley will speak at Houston Audubon's April Membership Meeting as a result of sponsorship from GCBO, Houston Audubon and several other organizations. David will present "The Art of Identification" and will be available to sign books as well. For over a decade, The Sibley Guide to Birds has been used by birders far and wide as the tool for identification of birds. David began painting birds at the age of seven and The Sibley Guide to Birds was the realization of a lifelong dream for him. Join us in welcoming David to our community at the United Way Center, 50 Waugh Drive in Houston and hear about his amazing journey with birds.

Spring Events

It's nearly spring and local bird-related events are coming up quick. GCBO's Quintana Spring Fling will be held daily the entire month of April at Quintana Neotropic Bird Sanctuary, FeatherFest April 12-15 in Galveston, and Migration Celebration, April 21-22 at San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. We encourage you to get out and attend these wonderful events geared towards birding and education. All of these events depend heavily on volunteers, so think about offering your unique skills to help out! Contact us if you can help with Quintana Spring Fling.

Monthly Bird Banding at GCBO

If you are a bird, it's spring! The Purple Martins are back, Cave Swallows are swarming under bridges, and migrant songbirds aren't far behind. Join us from 8:00 until noon on Saturday, March 17th for our next monthly bird banding session and see what migrants we find. Seeing birds in the hand is a great way to get kids excited about wildlife, but all ages are welcome.  See the map on our webpage for directions or find a map by going to Mapquest or GoogleMaps.  Note that some other navigators will not take you to the correct location.

If you are an ExxonMobil employee or retiree and would like to help us raise funds through their VIP Group matching grants program by donating four hours of volounteer time, please let us know! | Telephone 979-480-0999 | Contact Us
