2012 SAS Valero Go!Kids Challenge™ Motivates 170,000 to Exercise Every Day & Replace Sugary Drinks with Water
Valero and San Antonio Sports

February, 2012

More than 170,000 elementary school students in San Antonio will be encouraged to run, walk, jump and play 60 minutes every day as  San Antonio Sports’ 2012 Valero Go!Kids Challengegets underway.  The goal of the eight-week program, which takes place Feb. 22 through April 22, is to educate children about the importance of routine exercise and proper nutrition and help in the fight against childhood obesity.

Participants keep track of their activity in special journals or through the interactive Web site, gokidschallenge.com.  The Valero Go!Kids Challenge™ encourages elementary students to be physically active at least 60 minutes a day, six days a week.  This year students will receive a wristband.  Each time they visit a Valero Corner Store, they can get a FREE bottle of water.   “Even small amounts of sweetened drinks at home or at school can add up,” says Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of San Antonio Sports.  “Over the course of eight weeks, we hope that kids will drink more water and ultimately make it their first choice, as well as make exercise a daily habit.”

San Antonio Sports’ Valero Go!Kids ChallengeÔ  kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in elementary school physical education classes.   A kickoff press conference will be held at 10 a.m. at Carnahan Elementary School, 6839 Babcock Road, in Northside ISD

Olympian Josh Davis, three-time WNBA All Star Marie Ferdinand,  Northside ISD Superintendent Dr. Folks and other special guests will be part of the kickoff, along with 650 students.  They will do a special dance to mark the occasion and guests will join them.

On Sunday, April 22, the Valero Go!Kids ChallengeÔ culminates with a special field day at the University of Incarnate Word.  Participants will receive medals and backpacks for achieving their goals.

“San Antonio Sports is passionate about transforming our community through sports and fitness programs,” says Dr. Blackwood.  “Because it is available to every school district in San Antonio--and online –the Valero Go!Kids Challenge is effective in reaching children, their parents, teachers, school administrators and community leaders in the fight against childhood obesity.  Starting good habits early in life is the key to healthy adults.”

“As a parent and an athlete, I embrace the opportunity to be a part of any program that will allow me to help educate our youth about the importance of healthy eating and fitness ,” says Marie Ferdinand, who will visit local schools to encourage students’ participation throughout the program.  “The Valero Go!Kids Challenge allows me to do that.”

The 2012 Go!Kids Challenge sponsors include:  Valero Corner Store, San Antonio Express-News, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Frost, Subway, Oak Farms Dairy, AT&T, Servant’s Heart Foundation, esd & associates, H-E-B Helping Here, Fox29 San Antonio, Mix 96.1 and Time Warner Cable.
