Board volunteer? Know standards

Thousands of people volunteer their time to serve on the boards of charities, working to promote education, health, religion and other charitable causes. The charities they serve make a huge difference in the lives of many, many people.

But what are the standards for service on a board? What are the risks?

An officer or director does not have to meet the high standard of conduct of a trustee, but they must act in good faith, with ordinary care and in a manner the director reasonably believes is in the best interest of the charity. If an officer or director fails to meet this standard, the charity may be responsible for the person's acts or omissions.
