Official Launch & Kickoff WEDNESDAY for Citywide Program

Where Kids Go the (Marathon) Distance

 

WHAT:          

 

The official launch of the 2011 ING Kids Rock powered by San Antonio Sports will celebrate fitness with hundreds of children, Wane McGarity, former wide receiver for the UT Longhorns, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints, and the Harlandale High School drum line and cheerleaders.  They’ll be on hand to support the 500 students from 13 Harlandale elementary schools and join more than 170,000 other elementary students citywide who will run, jog or walk a marathon over 8-weeks.

500 elementary students from 13 Harlandale elementary schools

Wane McGarity, former UT Longhorn & Dallas Cowboy

Rod Dixon, 3 time Olympian and ING Kids Rock ambassador

Jennifer Ramos, city councilwoman, District 3

Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director, San Antonio Sports

Harlandale High School drum line & cheerleaders

 

WHY:            

 

For eight weeks, 170,000 children in 280 schools representing 16 school districts in grades K-5 will follow a walking or running training schedule during which they will cover 25.2 miles (or 13.1 for grades K-2).  Participants keep track of their activity in special journals. The ING Kids Rock powered by San Antonio Sports will culminate with school-based celebrations on Friday, Nov. 11 during which students will complete their final mile and the 26.2 mile marathon (or half marathon).  The ING Kids Rock will be held the following day at Brackenridge Park, and the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & 1/2 Marathon will be held on Sunday, Nov. 13.
