Exhausted savings leading more clients to GRACE

Many of the people who come to GRACE seeking assistance these days are folks who did everything right. They worked, saved, had investments, and paid their bills on time. Then something happened, they lost their job, a family member fell ill or some other calamity made them begin to tap into those reserves.

As new challenges like the harsh winter and higher gas prices have entered the picture and as the economy continues to sputter, more of our neighbors are exhausting these resources and are beginning to seek help, many for the first time.

Unfortunately, this isn't a trend that seems likely to end soon; however, with your continued support GRACE will be here to bridge the gap to those in need.

Internet, social media helping agencies stretch their donations

Social Media use saves money. While the majority of those who seek assistance from GRACE tell us that they found out about us through friends or co-workers, there is a new wave of clients who are turning to the internet to find the help they need.

Since the internet has become such an important source of news, entertainment, and information, it has become more important for agencies like GRACE to maximize our exposure through the use of our website, search engines, and social media. Most of these avenues are available at little or no cost, other than the staff time required for setup and maintenance.

Being able to reach our supporters via Twitter, Facebook, or email lets your donations do more for those in need. However, we are only able to utilize these low cost communication alternatives with less than 30% of our supporters. That's because they either don't use these services, haven't provided an email address or aren't following us on Twitter or Facebook.

You can help by encouraging your own network of friends and co-workers to subscribe to this newsletter, follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook. The more people who can be reached electronically, the more we save on postage and printing...two items that are definitely not low or no cost. Click here to forward this newsletter to your friends.

Wells Fargo volunteer wins grant for GRACE
Jan Smith, Ralph Siebert and Shonda Schaefer
Jan Smith, Ralph Siebert and Shonda Schaefer

Ralph Siebert has volunteered around GRACE for years and has applied for the Wells Fargo "Cash For Your Cause" program many times. Employees who are active in the community can apply on behalf of the charities where they volunteer and winners are selected in a quarterly random drawing.

At the end of March, GRACE was notified that Ralph's submission was selected and that we would be receiving a check. Ralph presented the check to GRACE's Shonda Schaefer and Jan Smith on Wednesday.

We'd like to say thank you to Ralph for his dedication to the GRACE mission and his efforts to maximize the effects of his contributions!

Does your company match hours or offer grants?

There are a number of companies that provide programs like that of Wells Fargo. Some programs provide funds when an employee volunteers a certain number of hours. So, check with your employer to see if they offer such a program and maximize the effect of your gift!
