AT&T donates artworks to UTSA
Around Texas

October, 2009

AT&T has donated more than three dozen works of art to the University of Texas at San Antonio, including paintings by early pop artist Nicholas Krushenick and abstract expressionist Esteban Vicente.

The university announced the gift Tuesday of pieces from the telecommunication company's private collection. They are all large-scale paintings by 20th-century artists.

The paintings will be unveiled at 9 a.m. today at the John Peace Library on the university's Main Campus, where much of the art will be permanently housed. A reception and guided tours will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

“This is truly an international collection,” UTSA President Ricardo Romo said. “Very few corporations have anything as extensive and large as AT&T, because they've been collecting for a lot of years, and very few of them make gifts to universities.”

The donation from the AT&T art collection to UTSA is the first such gift to a local university to be announced.

“We just are really enthusiastic to find different ways of participating in the community in a way that's meaningful,” said Renée Flores, AT&T executive director of external affairs.

“Certainly education is forefront to San Antonio's success, and UTSA is a central and pivotal point to that, and for us to contribute to art on the campus in a way that's going to be meaningful to students and faculty towards that goal of progressing with education in San Antonio was a great opportunity for us.”

The university has not had the donated artworks appraised, and AT&T declined to disclose the value of the collection.
