New Foundation Staff Update
Around Texas

July, 2009

Chance Lewis, associate professor of urban education in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture in the College of Education and Human Development, was recently selected as the Houston Endowment Inc. Endowed Chair in Urban Education.

This selection was made based on Lewis’ history of addressing issues to improve the educational experiences of students in urban educational environments. Lewis also is the co-director of the Center for Urban School Partnerships ( CUSP ) and the co-chair of the urban education program.

“I plan to continue to pursue innovative pedagogical practices for teachers in urban schools that will address achievement disparities and prepare urban students to be competitive in the 21st century,” Lewis said. “I will pursue a research agenda that will assist urban schools and teacher education programs to find innovative strategies to recruit highly qualified male teachers, particularly male teachers of color to staff high-need urban schools.”

Norvella Carter, professor of urban education, serves as co-director of CUSP with Lewis.

“We work together closely and complement each other in our urban school and research agendas. He is highly qualified, particularly in the preparation of educators for diverse classrooms, and he is an expert in the field of technology,” she said. “I was the first African-American endowed chair at Texas A&M University, and to my knowledge, he is the second. I would like to see many more people of color in endowed chair positions. He truly is outstanding and a great representative of excellence.”

Lewis is the author and/or editor of more than 75 publications focused on various issues in urban education.

He received his doctorate in educational leadership and teacher education from Colorado State University. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
